All about Bees!
Busy, Buzzy Bees...
-
Bees are arguably the most important insect pollinator.
-
There are many different species including honeybees, bumblebees, mason bees, leaf cutter bees, and carpenter bees.
-
Bees depend on flowers for food. They collect nectar (which is stored as honey) and pollen. A combination of pollen and honey is then used to feed their young.
-
Some types of bees, like honeybees and bumblebees, are social and live together as colonies. Others like mason, carpenter, and leaf cutter bees are solitary.
-
Bees have long tongues to collect nectar and pollen sticks to their hairy bodies.
-
Bees foraging for food are more interested in the flowers than in stinging. If left alone they will most likely not bother people.
-
Honeybees can only sting once, but bumblebees and carpenter bees can sting multiple times.
-
FUN FACT: Honeybees communicate with one another through dance.
