There are over 700 different species of butterfly in the U.S. and over 17,000 worldwide.

Butterflies love sunshine and are active during the day.

Butterflies feed on the nectar from flowers.

Several species of butterfly migrate including the Buckeye, the Painted Lady, and the Purple Wing. The most well-known butterfly migration is the Monarch which flies nearly 2,500 miles from their winter home in Mexico to Canada and back again.

Moths are sometimes confused for butterflies, but are much less brightly colored and are active at night.

FUN FACT: Butterfly tongues, known as proboscis, are so long that they coil them up when not eating.
