All about Butterflies!

Flutter by, Butterfly...

 

  • There are over 700 different species of butterfly in the U.S. and over 17,000 worldwide.

  • Butterflies love sunshine and are active during the day.

  • Butterflies feed on the nectar from flowers.

  • Several species of butterfly migrate including the Buckeye, the Painted Lady, and the Purple Wing.  The most well-known butterfly migration is the Monarch which flies nearly 2,500 miles from their winter home in Mexico to Canada and back again.

  • Moths are sometimes confused for butterflies, but are much less brightly colored and are active at night.

  • FUN FACT: Butterfly tongues, known as proboscis, are so long that they coil them up when not eating.
